Nathan Mawby, Property Journalist at the Herald Sun, is challenging Victoria to face a $5.4 billion choice: invest in the final 25 level crossing removals or use the funds to build nearly 20,000 new social housing homes.
As Victoria prepares its 2025–26 budget, housing leaders are sending a clear message: infrastructure investment must include housing. With 55,000 households on the social housing waitlist and the lowest proportion of social housing in the country, ACHA urges the government to reprioritise – now is the time to act.
Liz Thomas, ACHA chair and Managing Director of Common Equity Housing Limited (CEHL) Equity Housing Limited, says it best: “The federal election result was a clear signal people want housing to be a priority. If we don’t act now, the waiting lists will just keep growing.”
Co-operative housing models, like those ACHA supports, offer not just affordability but stability and community, giving everyday working families a secure place to call home and a voice in how their housing is managed.
Housing infrastructure is not just a budget line, it’s a lifeline.
