Common Equity NSW is honoured to announce the opening of its latest Co-operative Housing development by Mr. Tri Vo, Local Member for Cabramatta.

The event will occur at 10.00 am on Thursday 18 April 2024 at 3 Lasa St, Cabramatta.

This showcase development of 13 units was funded by the Department of Communities and Justice, Common Equity NSW (CENSW) and the Lac Viet Housing Co-operative.

The property was designed in collaboration with existing Co-op members and brings together a range of contemporary best practice ideas, including deliberative design and culturally appropriate elements and provides affordable, secure housing for Vietnamese seniors.

The newly completed housing project represents a crucial step forward in addressing the community’s growing need for affordable and sustainable housing options.

As stated by Mr. Vo “This Cabramatta property exemplifies their development approach, involving community input at every stage, from site selection to final design.

Culturally responsive elements, such as market gardens and communal spaces, are integrated into the design. This Cabramatta project showcases how community integration and thoughtful design can enhance co-operative living.”

As evidenced in recent research by the University of Western Sydney, Co-operative Housing has a huge range of benefits for residents, the broader community and government due to their focus on community involvement, quality housing, social networks, sense of belonging and improved employment and educational outcomes.

Nick Sabel, CENSW CEO, said “We are really pleased with the results of this development, providing secure, affordable houses to a cohort of people who will truly benefit from this model. Evidence shows that seniors in the Fairfield LGA face significant risk of rental-stress and housing insecurity. It is also a terrific addition to growing the Co-operative Housing sector in NSW.”
