The Co-operative Housing Development Program is making waves with the largest federal investment in new co-op housing in over 30 years — $423 million to support the creation of 837 new homes.
This includes $61.2 million for 136 row houses in Nova Scotia, led by the Upper Hammonds Plains Housing Co-op and Community Land Trust, a culturally significant initiative supporting Black Canadians.
It’s an inspiring example of how co-operatives are delivering housing solutions that are inclusive, community-led, and built for the long term.
ACHA is advocating this ambition to Australia. With the right investment, co-operative housing can play a much bigger role in delivering affordable, secure homes for the future. We are seeking a dedicated funding stream of $250 million per year for three years to build 500 co-op homes annually and create up to 25 new co-operatives across Australia.
