Common Equity NSW received unanimous approval from MidCoast Council for its Development Application for its Forster property at a council meeting on 21 August.

This is great news, as it means more secure and affordable housing for the region.

After a settling-in period, the aim is for tenants to form a co-operative, with information and education on this process provided from the start of tenant selection and scoping.

The next steps in the process are to obtain a construction certificate and put the build out to tender. Common Equity NSW plans to commence construction in February 2025.

The goal of this new co-op housing opportunity is to support women and families facing housing stress, particularly those who have left domestic and family violence (DFV) situations. By providing long-term affordable housing, the initiative aims to help them rebuild their lives.

Nick Sabel, CEO of Common Equity NSW, says, “Affordable housing is the foundation for wellbeing, a sense of stability and belonging, and a platform from which to access life-changing opportunities such as education, employment, and consistent support from relevant services.”
