The co-operative and mutual sector continues to thrive in Victoria, thanks to renewed government support and investment in streamlined regulation. The Victorian Government’s launch of the new myCAV online portal is a significant step forward, reducing red tape and allowing Victoria’s 581 co-ops and mutuals to focus more on delivering community value and less on administration.

At this week’s Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals (BCCM) and Australian Unity Icons luncheon, BCCM CEO Melina Morrison highlighted the sector’s strength and economic contribution – $8.7 billion in revenue and over 4 million members across the state.

Housing co-operatives like Common Equity Housing Limited (CEHL) are playing a vital role in diversifying housing supply in Victoria, offering secure, community-led alternatives to the private market, while co-operative financial institutions support thousands of essential workers into home ownership.

As we mark the UN International Year of Cooperatives 2025, it’s inspiring to see real momentum building – proof that co-operatives are not just an alternative, but a cornerstone of a fairer, more sustainable economy.
